Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones announced a "three-step plan" to address the province's surgery backlog, which will see for-profit private clinics performing some surgeries, starting with cataract procedures, before moving on to colonoscopies, endoscopies, and other non-urgent procedures.
The first stage of the plan involves adding 14,000 cataract surgeries through “new partnerships” at centres in Windsor, Kitchener-Waterloo and Ottawa.
As well, the province is putting $18 million in existing centres across the province for MRI and CT scans, cataract surgeries, other ophthalmic surgeries, certain gynecological surgeries and plastic surgeries.
Asked how the province would prevent private clinics from upselling patients, Premier Doug Ford sidestepped the question, saying they were focused on reducing the surgery backlog. He also said the new plan would help in making operating and surgical rooms more available for more procedures to be performed.
