Violence has broken out on the streets of Belgrade following President Milosevic's recognition of opposition election victories.
A small group of young rioters harassed traffic passing along Republic square.
They smashed the back window of a car with French diplomatic licence plates, and beat the driver when he emerged.
A man said to be a plainclothes police officer fired warning shots into the air and then aimed his gun at the crowd.
At least one young man was injured in the leg, eyewitnesses said.
But it wasn't clear whether he had been hit by a bullet.
The man was dragged away by plainclothes policemen into a trolley car and beaten.
Other youths stoned the vehicle and stopped the car, but ran away when more armed policemen arrived on the scene.
Several armed men inside the trolley refused to allow first aid workers into the vehicle.
Eventually the trolley pulled away, and the situation was diffused.
