The opposition is forming a coalition named INDIA, representing the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance. They are preparing for their third meeting, which is scheduled to be held in Mumbai. Prominent leaders from various opposition parties, including Sonia Gandhi from the Congress party, attended the meeting in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
During the two-day meeting, the leaders discussed crucial matters such as seat-sharing arrangements and crafting a common program for the upcoming elections. Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress president, expressed that they are putting aside their political differences to safeguard democracy, as stated in a press conference after the meeting.
However, facing the formidable challenge of countering Mr. Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which secured a significant majority in the 2019 Lok Sabha (the lower house of India's parliament) with over 300 seats out of 543, will be no easy task for the united opposition. Despite mixed results in recent state elections, the BJP currently governs approximately 15 states either independently or as part of coalitions. Moreover, it remains India's wealthiest political party, having declared an income of 19.17 billion rupees ($233.67 million; £178.4 million) in the fiscal year 2021-22. The BJP's strength in national elections lies in the popularity of Mr. Modi, who has successfully swayed voters even in states where they may have chosen a different party in local polls
