Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan has made some remarkable changes in the higher education system of Pakistan. Previously, students had to complete 18 years education i.e. MS/M.Phil in order to get enrolled in PhD program. But according to new PhD policy by HEC, the students can directly get themselves enrolled in PhD program right after BS degree i.e. 16 years education. The universities have been given the authority to decide the admission requirements for PHD. The minimum eligibility criteria set by Higher Education Commission is BS program. The students will have to complete large amount of credit hours in PhD if not complete MS/M.Phil.
The timeline for completing the doctoral degree has also been set by HEC; no student can complete PhD in less than 3 years time and the maximum time available is 8 years. The students can be given 2 years additional time under special circumstances if PhD is not complete in 8 years.
A student can get admission in PhD program in specialization other than he/she has studied in master degree. All the universities have been prohibited to offer PhD programs which are established less than 10 years ago. All the universities will have to require NOC from HEC to start the PhD program. The research thesis need not to send out of country for approval instead Pakistani professors can check and approve the research thesis of students. Minimum CGPA required for admission in PhD program is 3.0 out of 4 under semester system and 1st division under annual system.
The new undergraduate admission policy 2020 and the PhD admission policy has been implemented from 1 January 2021 in all Pakistani public and private sector universities. Higher Education Commission has also abolished 2 year BA/BSc and MA/MSc programs and the students will get admission in 4 year BS programs. Associate degree program has been introduced to replace BA/BSc program. After the completion of ADP, the students can get admission in the 5th semester of BS program.
