Champagne, Parma ham, Manchego cheese… just three among thousands of regional food and drink products protected by EU Geographical Indications (GIs).
The European Parliament has approved an update of EU rules to better protect and promote speciality products from Europe’s unique regions.
MEPs went even further, proposing new Geographical Indications for craft and artisanal products. These will cover industries like textiles, jewellery, glass, ceramics and cutlery.
The new framework will benefit businesses and boost jobs and tourism across the EU. It will help consumers to easily recognise quality products made in the EU and help fight counterfeiting.
