The Bus Rapid Transit System (BRT) is a bus based mass transit system, operating at higher speeds than traditional buses and featuring some aspects of light rail transit or metro systems.
The BRT is being developed as a key part of the new Thika Interchange, which is being developed adjacent to the Thika Superhighway. The interchange will include a bus-only lane on Thika Rd and new signal control systems (including bus priority) to improve the flow of traffic at this notorious bottleneck.
It will be the first in a series of rapid transport projects for the greater Nairobi area.
