(13 May 2018) LGBT ACTIVISTS PARADE THROUGH HAVANA, DEMAND EQUAL RIGHTS
Gay rights activists paraded through Havana on Saturday, calling for the legalisation of same-sex marriage and equal rights for the island's LGBT community, once heavily repressed by the Communist government.
Participants in the gay pride parade danced and chanted through city streets, led by Mariela Castro, the daughter of former President Raul Castro, who has spearheaded the movement for greater acceptance of the LGBT community in the country.
Activists want the government to amend the country's laws during a National Assembly meeting in July, when the parliament is expected to modify the country's constitution, and allow same-sex marriage.
The new President, Miguel Diaz Canel, has not indicated whether he would support that kind of reform, but activists hope the change in leadership to a post-revolutionary generation could provide impetus to their bid for greater rights.
