Every 36 seconds 1 person in the US dies from Heart problems and 1 in 4 deaths are due to cardiovascular disease. Medicines can control the condition for some time but eventually patient needs a complete heart transplant. Compared to patients, the number of donors are small, for some blood type or heart size makes it impossible to find a heart.
Researchers have built several artificial hearts since 1950s but since it requires to beat millions of times per year the mechanical parts gets easily worn out and even fail. Most of today's Artificial hearts only buys you time patients have to wear small power boxes at all times with wiring running out of chest, leading to infections and hope to get a compatible heart donor in time.
But a new design BiVACOR, could change all of this. This device uses a single spinning disc to drive blood and the rotary pump levitates between magnets so there’s virtually zero mechanical wear over time. Scientists are hoping to connect with wireless technology so the battery in heart can be charged easily and there are no wires running in and out of patient.
