To escape persecution by Nazi Germany, an anti-Semitic movement, her family left Germany for exile in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. However, during World War II, when the Netherlands was occupied by the German army, Jews were persecuted in the Netherlands as well, and on July 6, 1942, they were forced to live in a safe house. Anne was forced to enter a safe house on July 6, 1942, where she lived for two years, during which time she kept a diary of her time there.

On August 4, 1944, the Nazi SS discovered the safe house and all of its residents were transferred to concentration camps. Anne and her sister, Margot Frank, were transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Anne was unable to survive the unsanitary conditions and contracted typhus and died at the age of 15, probably in early March 1945.

Otto was the only one of the eight people living in the safe house to survive until after the war, and he was given the diary by Miep Heath. Otto decided to publish the diary in order to share his daughter Anne's wish for a world without war and discrimination with the whole world. The diary was translated into more than 60 languages and became an international bestseller with more than 25 million copies sold.
