Why isn’t Puerto Rico a state?
The island has a higher population than 20 other states and is larger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined. It has been under American control for over 125 years, yet nearly half of Americans are unaware that Puerto Ricans are American citizens.
Despite this, many politicians advocate for Puerto Rico to make a decision and claim they will support it. Yet when the time comes, Puerto Ricans are ignored. In 2017, 97% of Puerto Ricans voted in favor of statehood, however, this was due to shockingly low turnout because of political boycotts.
