STORYLINE
Thousands of Muslims attended Laylet al-Qadr prayers at the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem on Friday night.
They arrived at the compound and under pouring rain participated in the prayers which took place on the last Friday of the month of Ramadan.
Laylet al-Qadr (Night of Power) is observed between the 26th and 27th day of fasting and is considered the holiest night of the year for Muslims.
It marks the occasion when the Quran, the Holy Book, is believed to have descended from heaven to the Prophet Muhammad.
Israeli police and border guards were stationed around the city, securing the area.
