Shyama Mai Mandir is a famous Kali temple in Darbhanga. Many believe this temple houses the largest statue of the goddess Kali in India.
The temple is situated on the cremation spot of the late Darbhanga Maharaj Shri Rameshwar Singh. The temple was founded by Maharaj Shri Kameshwar Singh in 1933.
The Shyama Mai complex has 6 temples around a central lake. The temple is unique in nature as the puja offering is done through both Vedic and Tantrik methods. The temple ceiling still has figures appearing to be related to ritual actions (tantra sadhana) used by the then Maharaj, as he was a devotee of Devi Kali. The arti bell is made of ashtadhatu and was gifted by the King of Nepal, ringing only twice daily during the times of arti.
Despite sitting on the pyres of the royal family members, this temple is considered auspicious by all, including newlyweds, who are not allowed to visit the cremation site within their first year of their marriage.
Not related to religion, the temple also offers peace and solace from the hustle and bustle of the city. This is a major tourist attraction for those who would like to explore the cultural heritage, rich history, and architectural design fostered by the royalty of Durbhanga, once considered to be one of the richest princely states in India.
