Belo vows to go on speaking up for the "terrorised"
East Timor's Nobel Prize-winning bishop on Monday (25/11) pledged in Dili to keep speaking out for "terrorised" people in his territory, which is annexed by Indonesia. At a news conference, Bishop Carlos Ximenes Filipe Belo called for Indonesian authorities to "check accurately and personally the way that many East Timorese are treated in their day-to-day life without minimum respect for their human dignity." The bishop called the news confererence partly to condemn
a German magazine for "manipulating" an interview with him, and thus causing friction between him and the Indonesian government in Jakarta. Der Spiegel quoted him as condemning Indonesian military tactics -- accusing Indonesian troops of treating East Timorese like "scabby dogs" and robbing East Timorese of their freedom and culture. Bishop Belo denies having made these comments.
Following Belo's news conference, hundreds of East Timorese youths staged an anti-Indonesian demonstration outside his offices in Dili. They brandished banners saying "Viva Belo" and "Viva Timor L'Este." They demanded that Jakarta release separatist leader Jose Xanana Gusmao, who was arrested in Dili in 1992 and is currently serving a 20-year jail sentence. One banner showed Indonesian President Suharto holding two bloodied skulls, with the words "Suharto eats Timorese bones."
