It seems Lee helped SNSD a lot settle into the Kpop industry. Our girls appeared as guests in some of his live performance in 2007. And SNSD's second single 'Girl's generation' is originally sang by Lee.
SM seems to have taken our girls' group name from the title of this song of his.
