The feds have sued the state over three state laws meant to protect undocumented immigrants.
But...back in the 1990s, California was waging its own fight against people in the country illegally--through Proposition 187-- which would have denied them most public services.
Voters backed the measure...but federal judges stopped it from being implemented.
The fight over it, transformed the state's politics and people's identity as Californians.
