Security blankets. Comfort objects. Loveys. These can be anything, like a stuffed animal or blanket, that your baby or toddler forms a special attachment to and uses for comfort. A lovey provides a feeling of security and provide comfort for transitions, new experiences, and unfamiliar environments. Once your toddler is 12 months or older, they can also be helpful for moving away from breastfeeding to sleep and transitioning to helping put down your toddler sleepy but awake as the lovey can now stay with them on their sleep surface. I often recommend my friends who are nursing to sleep to introduce a lovey and keep it around baby every time they nurse. Baby starts to pair the association that this comfort item comes around when breastfeeding. So the item can continue to provide comfort when the breast is removed or not available. Any item can be a lovey. I’ve seen them be burp cloths, metal trucks, plastic dinosaurs, ribbons, blankets and stuffed animals or dolls.
Does your baby have a lovey?
