Dalaguete, formally the Municipality of Dalaguete, is a first-class municipality in the Philippine province of Cebu. The population is 74,596 people, according to the 2020 census.
Dalaguete is named after the dalakit (Ficus benjamina) tree. They revere this tree because they believe it houses diwatas, spirits that can bring sickness or luck. The interconnecting roots generate vast caverns when completely grown.
These trees were important landmarks before the Spaniards arrived. Under the shade, people held celebrations, contests, trading meetings, and other communal events. They sell their commodities and trade with local roving traders bringing Chinese and Asian goods from Cebu in dalaket-shaded markets.
The location of the church or the poblacion would have been a community gathering place for the natives. It was also the home of a massive dalakit tree, which provided shade and shelter while people went about their business. Pre-Hispanic Dalaguete has been called dalakit for generations. The Spanish government built the church and an encomienda because of its accessibility and repute as a community gathering place. This common place, and this tree, sparked the idea for a larger community that would later be known as Dalaguete.
Additional Facts:
Located 84 kilometres (52 mi) south of Cebu City, Dalaguete is bordered to the north by the town of Argao, to the west are the towns of Badian and Alegria, to the east is the Cebu Strait, and to the south is the town of Alcoy.
