Let’s stop talking about whether we need #reuse systems for #packaging, and start talking about how to make those systems work.

Half of #paper consumed in the EU is for packaging which is most likely used once, then sent to the incinerator. Our streets are full with litter and our forests are bearing the scars of this destructive industry - and it is only going to get worse. From 2012 to 2020, the average EU citizen increased their paper packaging waste by 10kg per year, and that figure is rising.
Individual choices matter, but most of us don’t have much control over the containers and wrapping that hold and protect what we buy. Even in industries where reuse systems used to be the norm, throwaway packaging has now become the default.
With every e-commerce delivery box ripped open and dumped straight in the recycling, every lunch served in a cardboard pot that gets thrown in the bin, every Tetra-pak carton of barista oat milk, pressure on forests grows. The result is more forest destruction, and more devastation for forest communities.
In November 2022 the European Commission delivered a proposal for a new Regulation on EU Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR). The Regulation aims to tackle Europe’s packaging waste crisis. If they get it right, it could help usher in systemic changes that would break Europe’s reliance on needless throwaway packaging. But if they get it wrong, the Regulation could accelerate substitution of single-use plastic packaging for single-use paper-based packaging, intensifying Europe’s paper packaging waste crisis and doing nothing to get at the heart of the issue; overconsumption.
