Wanted: Dead Review, I'm In Love and IGN is Tripping. Today I am covering a game that I think has taken everyone by surprise, Wanted: Dead by former members of Team Ninja now in a new studio called: SOLEIL. This action game is hard to define, but it is a mix of character action/beat em' up style close quarters combat with 3rd person cover shooter mechanics as well. It is a fascinating and fun game that focuses in on dense arcade inspired level-design with a charming combination of brutality and campiness. It's vibe and even some of its mechanics remind me more of Dead or Alive than Ninja Gaiden, which I discuss in the review.
When I first started playing, I think I was expecting it to be Ninja Gaiden with guns, and I think a lot of other reviewers were expecting the same thing. It is clear that the IGN reviewer, who definetly decided to make a statement by rating the game a 4/10, wanted to play Bayonetta or Devil May Cry (even complaining about not having air juggles in the game). How the main character, Stone, is going to fly around and pull off air juggles when the game is supposed to be more tactical and grounded is never addressed by the reviewer. The IGN reviewer makes few actual critiques and spends most of the review making vague complaints that either contradict themselves or contradict what he has said in other reviews (for example he hates how much parrying is in the game, and yet gives Sifu - a complete parry fest - a 9/10 and doesn't mention an issue with parry in that release at all).
What's fascinating with Wanted: Dead is that, like Gungrave G.O.R.E. I think it is a clear bellweather of a divide in taste among mainstream gamers. In the current "games as services" model, this title is enduring the wrath of places like IGN who want another cookie cutter toned down action RPG that they can say reminds them of Dark Souls. For players like myself, who apprecaite the richness of a focus on gameplay and unique combat ideas, then I think Wanted: Dead is going to be a breath of fresh air in a dull and generic release schedule that all blends together into an endless wash of service over gameplay.
Right now you can pickup Wanted: Dead on Steam (PC), PS4/PS5, and Xbox One or Xbox Series X. I ended up getting the game on PC (for future mods) as well as PS4 Pro, and I can say that this game will not be coming to Switch not only due to its content, but also there is no way the Switch can handle this game hardware wise without exploding ha.
