Work began on the sewer around six years ago after plans were approved to replace an old sewer built in the 1860s when the population of London was just a fraction of what it is today. The current system struggles to cope with the 39 million tonnes of sewage Londoners produce every year, so this £4.2 billion project was envisioned to take its place.
Every year, sewage leaks into the Thames due to the outdated infrastructure currently in place. With just 2mm of rainfall, the Victorian sewage system starts to overflow, but it is hoped that by 2025, when construction is finished, this will no longer be a problem.
Seven metres wide, 25km long and costing nearly £5bn it’s designed to divert sewage to a treatment plant in east London.
we ride a bike along the tunnel before it fills up with sewage.,
The Tunnel will be officially handed over in 2025 to Thames Water but there will be test flushes!
