REYNAULDS.COM presents a great video from our May REI Tourwhich included a great Narrow Gauge Ride from Zittau to Bad Oybin Germany.
After 1 ½ hours on a double decker train originating in Dresden we arrived in Zittau. We walked through the station and our narrow gauge train waiting for us. After six stops, we reached Bertsdorf. It is definitely worth to get off the train here so you can watch the departure of both steam trains at the same time. Spend a little time in Oybin, it is so quaint. Returning back to Bertsdorf, you can take the other train to Jonsdorf. A perfect day trip for the train enthusiast.
Another great sight seeing attraction in this region is the Rock Formation Bastei and Fortress Königstein Only a short bus ride from Dresden is the Bastei, a wonderful rock formation in Saxon Switzerland. One of the first tour guides Carl Heinrich Nicolai wrote in 1801: “What depth of feeling it pours into your soul! You can stand here for a long time without being finished with it (…) it is so difficult to tear yourself away from this spot.” I think this says it all.
Another highlight of this region is our visit to Königstein Fortress. As one of the largest fortifications in Europe it sits atop of the table hill with the same name. The rock plateau rises almost 800 feet above the river Elbe. There are over 50 buildings, some over 400 years old. Königstein Fortress is a an example of military power and civil life in a fortress.
