After a tough fight in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, Maharshtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis on Saturday announced that Bharatiya Janta Party will not contest for the Mayor and deputy Mayor post in BMC. Devendra Fadnavis also said that the BJP has decided not to field any candidates for crucial posts of Chairman for Standing Committees. The Shiv Sena and the BJP broke its 25-year old tiea month before BMC elections. After BJP has decided to back off from mayoral election, it seems that the way for Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, a Shiv Sena corporator from Mumbai, is now become clear to become next Mayor of Mumbai.
Shiv Sena Spokesperson Sanjay Raut announced that the party has decided to field, Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, for Mayor’s post and its two times corporator Hemangi Worlikar for Deputy Mayor’s post. However, the names of leaders contesting for the position of different committees in the BMC is yet to be announced. The post for the Mayor and Chairman of Standing Committee are considered to be most important in BMC.
BMC is the richest civic body in India with an estimated annual budget of approximately Rs. 40000 crores.
