We’re all in a purple haze this time each year. It’s jacaranda time! For some this tree, packed with purple blossoms, is just too messy to deal with. All those flowers continuously falling onto cars, streets and sidewalks. But for others, this is a small price to pay for the reward of the dramatic spring ritual. The species of jacaranda that dominates Southern California originated in South America and was first planted here about a century ago. Some areas bloom out more than others — on Brand Boulevard in Glendale, for example, 48 flowering jacaranda trees stretch from Colorado Street to San Fernando Road. The jacaranda actually blooms twice a year, usually in late May or early June, and again in the fall, the pre-summer flowering is much bigger, and messier, than the fall.
