In a time when fairy tales seemed to come alive, the wedding of Fernando Poe Jr. and Susan Roces captured the hearts of a nation. With President Ferdinand Marcos and First Lady Imelda Marcos as Principal Sponsors, their union became a dream wedding, straight out of the pages of the most romantic book.
On December 16, 1968, as the first simbang gabi of the season began, Susan Roces, also known as Jesusa Levy Sonora, officially became Mrs. Fernando Poe Jr., or Ronald Allan Poe, in a civil ceremony officiated by Mayor Gerry Angeles in Valenzuela, Bulacan. The day started with uncertainty, as Susan's whereabouts were unknown to her family, but soon they discovered that the couple had eloped and were now happily married.
The newlyweds traveled to FPJ's Beverly Hills home in Antipolo, and it was there that Susan sent a heartfelt note, expressing her joy and excitement, urging her loved ones to join them in planning their church wedding.
Racing against time, Susan and her dear friend rushed to meet with Pitoy Moreno for the wedding ensemble and Mila Dayrit for the rings. With just seven days to prepare, Pitoy Moreno vowed to import lace from Italy to create a stunning wedding gown.
And so, on Christmas Day, December 25, 1968, the culmination of their love story took place. The bridal entourage gathered at Susan's residence before proceeding to Santuario de San Jose in Greenhills. Susan entrusted her friend with the important task of lighting the candle during the ceremony, emphasizing the need for care and attention.
The reception unfolded at the Presidential Hall of the Philippine Plaza, a grand celebration fit for a king and queen. Later in the day, the newlyweds embarked on their honeymoon to Japan, basking in the love and magic of their fairy tale-like wedding.
This real-life fairy tale of love continues to captivate people's hearts, a story that never loses its charm no matter how many times it is retold. The wedding of Fernando Poe Jr. and Susan Roces remains a cherished memory, a testament to the enduring power of love and the beauty of a love story that resonates through the ages.
