After Operation Uranus was launched on 19th September 1942, the German left and right flanks, which were guarded by Romanians, Hungarians and Italians were outflanked by the Soviets.
The Soviet 62nd and 64th Army surrounded and closed the encirclement in a town called: "Kalach", this let the entire German 6th Army to be cut off outside from the rest of the Army Group South who were still in the Caucasian region.
After the German High Command heard the news of the encircled 6th Army, Operation Winter storm was launched under the command of Generalfledmarschall Erich von Manstein, commander of the newly created Army Group Don to relieve the 6th Army from Stalingrad, however, due to extreme cold weather and difficult terrain, the Operation was cancelled in the middle of the battle and the 6th Army continued to suffered under isolation and receiving small amount of supplies from the Luftwaffe till 2nd February 1943.
Out of 91,000 German soldier who surrendered in Stalingrad, only 5000 made back it home after the war in 1956.
