Bacon, in Of Studies, discusses primarily the benefits of reading. Here I have explained "Of Studies" by Francis Bacon in English. Along with the summary, I have addressed the main theme of the essay.
Bacon starts the essay with the three ways through which reading benefits the reader. However, Bacon does not ask us for excessive reading. He makes his argument balanced by asking us not to indulge in books excessively.
In the essay, Bacon also provides the right method to study. Bacon says that books should be read to understand the main points of the book not for an argument nor contradiction.
He also warns us that not to treat every book equally. Some books are to be tasted, some are to be swallowed and some are to be digested.
Along with the benefits of reading, writing, and discussion, Bacon discusses the benefits of reading history, poetry, mathematics, morals and logic, and rhetoric. He says,
"Histories make Men Wise; Poets Witty; The Mathematics Subtill; Natural Philosophy Deepe; Morall Grave; Logick and Rhetorick Able to Contend."
Francis Bacon concludes the essay by stating that studies can cure any ailment of the mind.
