Darwin will spend Christmas on high alert with the chance of a cyclone developing in the Top End.
The Bureau of Meteorology has been keeping a close eye on a tropical low which has been intensifying in the Arafura Sea.
It is expected to develop into a cyclone sometime late on Christmas day.
“The system is not expected to pass directly over Darwin, severe wet and windy conditions are expected across the Darwin area this weekend, and additional warnings may be issued,” BOM’s Hazard Preparedness and Response Manager Shenagh Gamble said.
