In a startling development, a Qatar court has sentenced eight retired Indian Navy personnel to death for allegedly spying on behalf of Israel against Qatar. India has expressed its profound shock over this verdict and announced its intention to contest the decision.
The individuals in question are Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Saurabh Vashisht, Commander Purenendu Tiwari, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Commander Amit Nagpal, and Sailor Ragesh. They were employed at Qatar's Dahra Global Technologies and Consulting Services, a private firm providing services to Qatar's defense and security agencies.
These eight individuals were apprehended in August of the previous year on charges of espionage for Israel, according to Qatari authorities. Throughout their incarceration, Indian authorities have been facilitating consular access.
The Indian External Affairs Ministry has issued a statement expressing its deep shock at the death penalty verdict and its commitment to exploring all legal options. They have also emphasized the importance of the case and their ongoing efforts to provide consular and legal assistance. Due to the confidential nature of the proceedings, further comments were withheld at this time.
In response to this critical situation, veteran leader Kapil Sibal has called for the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the government to exhaust all available avenues for the release of these ex-Navy officers. The situation remains complex, and efforts to resolve it continue.
