Fresh, clean water: the basic need of all life on Earth.
Europe has some of the world’s most beautiful rivers and lakes, stretching for thousands of kilometres across the continent. Our rivers and lakes are home to vital ecosystems: diverse communities of organisms that we all depend on.
‘Good ecological status’ is a key term in the EU Water Framework Directive – the policy framework through which European freshwaters are managed. Member states are required to conserve and restore their rivers and lakes to good ecological status by 2027.
But what does ‘good ecological status’ mean, and why does it matter?
