Bank robbers stole an unknown amount of loot from a Berlin bank in the Steglitz district after digging a 30-meter (100-foot) tunnel from a nearby car park. To get into the bank, they broke through two reinforced concrete walls. Police have no leads.
According to Spiegel Online, the robbers broke through a concrete wall in a parking garage and dug a 30-meter (100 foot) tunnel into a nearby branch of Berliner Volksbank.
The thieves emptied more than 100 safe deposit boxes. The total value stolen is still unclear.
The robbers also set a fire in the safe deposit room, possibly to cover their tracks.
The tunnel was "very professional", according to a police spokeswoman. The tunnel was built with ceiling supports to prevent cave-ins, according to Opposing Views. It went unnoticed because the tunnel was located in an area of the parking garage that was separated by a rolling shutter, according to Spiegel Online. The robbers it seems disposed of the excavated dirt from the tunnel at another location.
Authorities were first alerted when neighbors living by the car park reported a fire around 6:15am, said a police spokeswoman.
