Edward Said’s Orientalism is one the most influential books of the past fifty years. Vivek Chibber and Bashir Abu-Manneh explain its historic importance and offer a critique of its fatal intellectual flaws. They also explore how understandings of racism and imperialism—and strategies to combat them—have changed over time.
Vivek Chibber is the editor of Catalyst journal and professor of sociology at New York University. Bashir Abu-Manneh is a lecturer at the University of Kent and a contributing editor at Jacobin.
