Alabama lawmakers are rushing to adopt a new congressional map amidst a heated disagreement on what the districts should look like.
The urgency stems from a U.S. Supreme Court ruling which affirmed that Alabama's congressional map, which only includes one majority-Black district out of seven, likely violated the Voting Rights Act ordering the state to create a second district. However, the exact details of the map are causing intense debate among lawmakers as the deadline looms.
Consequently, Alabama Republicans, who hold a majority in the legislature and control the redistricting process, are tasked with drawing the new map.
While the voters who sued the state proposed a second district with Black residents comprising 50.5% of the population, the GOP majority has not conceded that such a district is necessary, pointing to proposals with lower percentages of Black voters.
