Okay, I pulled the pistons out of the 22RE motor. Number #2 was not a happy camper. From what I can see, the ring fractured and dug its way out of the land and perhaps made entry into the cylinder. I'm still not sure if the ring around my bore camera also dropped in there and/or if part of the ring simply let go and went to town. Interestingly, all the upper piston rings were broken into two or more parts. Ironically, the oil control rings were spotless, yet not controlling oil consumption - so I don't know. At this point, I'm probably just going to order a replacement piston and slap everything back together for now.
Also, I discovered the crankshaft rod journals have been ground down .010" / .025mm under sized and the motor is running ACL + .010" oversized rod bearings. Interesting...
