STORYLINE:
People across Chile commemorated the 50th anniversary of the coup led by Gen. Augusto Pinochet that ushered in a brutal military dictatorship for almost two decades on Monday.
A ceremony at the La Moneda government palace was attended by regional leaders, including Chilean President Gabriel Boric.
The military regime led by General Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) left 3,200 people dead, including 1,469 disappeared.
Half a century later, 297 repressors have been convicted and 1,300 trials for human rights violations are still ongoing.
The impact of the coup is still felt to this day, with divisions between the ruling party and right-wing opposition over what role each played in the uprising.
Boric also commemorated the date with an event in the Plaza de la Constitución, alongside Senator Isabel Allende, daughter of former president Salvador Allende.
The event was attended by more than a 1,000 local and international guests, including some regional presidents of Chile.
The right-wing opposition, heavily criticised by the president, was absent.
Days ago the government launched a National Search Plan for the disappeared - of whom only 307 have been located - a task that until now had been in the hands of human rights groups.
