The recently discovered Temple Theatre of Pietravairano. The Temple and Theater of San Nicola is an ancient Roman theater located in the municipality of Pietravairano, in Campania.
Having remained forgotten even in the modern era, it was rediscovered by chance on February 4, 2000 by Nicolino Lombardi, a scholar and historian of the same area, during a paragliding and hang-gliding session.
In the years immediately following (since 2002) the archaeological site has been restored, in order to protect it and use it for tourism.
The temple-theater is characterized by two peculiarities: being located on the tip of a mountain (about 520 m above sea level) and having, precisely, a religious temple and an ancient theater merged together in a single structure.
Of the temple only the base and the outline of the internal plan remain, while the theatre was still in good condition at the time of its rediscovery (especially the semicircular cavea). It is assumed that the theatre had a capacity of around 2000 seats.
The theater was inaugurated in the Republican era on one of the spurs of Mount San Nicola, in the Caserta area.
