In this thought-provoking TEDx talk, Masoud Kaviani explores the looming threat of "artificial unemployment" due to the rise of artificial intelligence. Reflecting on a personal story of a skilled worker replaced by AI, Masoud delves into how AI could transform job landscapes beyond manual labor, encroaching into intellectual and creative domains. Drawing parallels with past industrial revolutions, he argues that while AI might initially displace jobs, it holds the potential to create new opportunities and elevate societal welfare.
Masoud proposes two innovative solutions to tackle this challenge: adopting a 'lantern in the dark night' approach—focusing on near-term adaptation rather than long-term uncertainties—and advocating for robust regulatory frameworks to control AI's pace, ensuring humans have time to adjust and integrate AI as a collaborative tool rather than a replacement. This talk is a call to action for individuals and policymakers to embrace AI thoughtfully, ensuring it serves as a catalyst for human advancement rather than a harbinger of widespread unemployment. Masoud Kaviani is a seasoned data scientist, machine learning engineer, and AI expert with over a decade of experience in shaping the future of technology across various industries.
