About a dozen migrants escaped from a camp near the Hungarian border with Serbia on Thursday as many others tried to leave the camp to continue travelling north towards Western Europe.
The ones who managed to escape were later detained by riot police on the highway.
The people, many Syrians fleeing war, want to eventually reach Germany or elsewhere in the West and are trying to avoid registering in economically depressed Hungary, which is more likely to return them to their home countries.
More than 340,000 migrants have arrived in Europe since the beginning of the year.
Around 160,000 of them have entered Hungary, which blames Germany for encouraging more Syrians to apply for asylum.
