The Ameiva ameiva lizard, also known as green ameiva or jungle runner is native to Central and South America. It was first recorded in the U.S. during the mid-1950s after several escaped from a Miami pet dealer. The lizard prefers disturbed rain forests that have recently been harvested.
The ameiva has a streamlined body, pointed head, slightly forked tongue, and muscular hind legs. They grow up to 18 to 20 inches. Both sexes have random black specs and mottling along the sides and females usually have much less green than males and a more dusty of a green color.
