The Vatican unveiled its annual Christmas tree and Nativity scene which pays special tribute to the origins of the beloved tradition on its 800th anniversary. The "nostalgia for silence and prayer", this is what a Nativity scene should awaken in all of us as we live our "often so hectic lives", said Pope Francis before the inauguration of the life-sized depiction of Christ's birth on St Peter's square in Rome. On Saturday, December the 9th, Cardinal Fernando Vergez Alzaga presided over the ceremony. He is the president of the governorate of Vatican City State, which is responsible for both, the Nativity scene as well as the Christmas tree in front of St Peter's Basilica.
