Oboni's path to the throne was anything from conventional. He was born into the royal dynasty of the medieval Igala Kingdom in 1913. He had a strong early connection to his people's traditions, which served as the foundation for his subsequent unwavering position on tradition. He succeeded to the throne in 1946, capturing the spirit of the thriving Igala Kingdom at its height with a sharp mind and unwavering commitment. As the accepted spiritual and executive leader of his people, Oboni's role as king was significant and influential. But even for a king, his reign was unusual.

When Oboni's authority was created in 1946, it was a model of development while preserving a strong respect for tradition. The Igala kingdom had a spike in prosperity when he was king. The emphasis on education that this movement placed was one of its major features. Early on, Oboni understood that education was the foundation of progress and a means of enabling his people to prosper in a world that was changing quickly. His investment in education paid off, as the Igala kingdom's literacy rate dramatically increased during his rule. His work prepared the way for succeeding generations by arming them with the knowledge they needed to create a better future.


The bee episode that followed Oboni's reluctance to take off his headgear in front of Queen Elizabeth II was a turning point in how the colonial government saw him. Oboni was no longer regarded as merely a local monarch, but rather as a fearsome figure who dared to defy colonial authority.
