Did you know that the Philippines saved 1300 European Jews during World War II, but they could have saved more. From 1935, the Philippines rescued Jews from Hitler's persecution through a selective immigration plan, and Quezon’s "Mindanao Plan", a plan to create a Jewish agricultural settlement on Mindanao to be built by refugees with lower status. However, President Manuel Quezon was limited by the American government to admitting only 10,000 Jews over 10 years, and land issues with local Filipinos and political complications also led to the failure of the plan - meaning no Jewish refugees ever arrived in Mindanao. Unfortunately, Jewish refugees in Manila who escaped Nazi persecution in Europe, only faced another conflict when Japan attacked the Philippines in 1941. This ended the Jewish Immigration Plan, and the fate of Jewish refugees still in Europe is unknown. While 1,300 is a small number compared to the overall victims of World War 2, the Philippines provided a safe place for Jews during a time when most of the world rejected them.
