(7 Jan 2020) Worshippers gathered for a service at St. Sava church in Belgrade on Tuesday to mark Orthodox Christmas.
In Serbia, Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7, observing the Julian calendar.
The proceedings were overseen by the spiritual leader of the Serbian Orthodox church, Patriarch Irinej, who was accompanied by a selection of clergy.
After the liturgy, Irinej handed out small loaves of Christmas bread, made by Serbian bakers as a part of ancient tradition in Serbia symbolising wealth and prosperity for the forthcoming year.
Speaking outside the church, a member of the congregation said: "We hope for a new beginning, happier times."
