If you spend a lot of time helping someone who is disabled, seriously ill, or needs a lot of extra help, then you are a carer, even if you haven’t thought of yourself in that way before.
Caring can be rewarding at times, but also tough. You can feel like you’ve been left to fend for yourself. But you are entitled to support, and you can ask for it.
So, what can you do to get support as a carer?
1. Get a free carer’s assessment from your local council. You may be eligible for practical help, emotional support, benefits advice, training or help with taking a break.
2. Make a claim for Carer’s Allowance – this is a weekly benefit for carers, and could put more money in your pocket if you spend time looking after someone else.
3. Find out about respite care – which could be someone coming to sit with the person you care for, a day centre, or a temporary stay in a care home. It’s only human to need some time for yourself. You might be able to get support from your local council, or a charity might provide help with the costs.
4. Make an emergency plan – so you know that replacement care could be quickly sorted out if you weren’t able to provide it.
5. Get support from other carers – carers’ groups, or online forums are a great way to get support from people who know what you’re going through.
