The peaceful Solidarity revolution of 1980 led to the collapse of communism in 1989. On 31 August 1980 the Gdańsk Shipyard saw the signing of an agreement that became a milestone of contemporary Polish history and heralded the future downfall of the communist system. Other countries of the so-called Eastern bloc, driven by values of Solidarity, followed the Polish example . The need to manifest solidarity is visible also in the modern, independent Poland which is part of the EU and NATO. By sharing its experience of transformation and supporting other countries in need Poland makes the idea of solidarity still alive.
