Ahoy hoy!
Today I get to talk about one of my original dream guitars - or rather the Epiphone version of it!
I go on a bit on this rather special instrument, as I really love it so much - and it has a super story behind it - or rather a couple!
The original SG (or Solid Guitar) was brought into play by Gibson in 1961 - after the sales of the Les Paul from 1958 - 60 were dropping badly.
Amazing when you think about the prices of 1959 Les Paul guitars now...
So they did various things to reduce the cost of their instruments - thought to be one of the reasons for the drop in sales.
1. Got rid of the maple top carve
2. gave the instrument a double cut
3. Evolved the whole thing into what we know as the SG
Les Paul apparently hated it (even though it is the main focus on the cover of his wonderful "Les Paul NOW!" album.)
So many stories about that. And so many players - why?
Because it was affordable, light and interestingly, very easy to play - there have been studies, you know! It is supposedly the fastest guitar there is.
How you put numbers to something so obviously based on individual opinion is beyond me... That's not true - it's been most of my life... Oh well,
Watch, enjoy, listen and then go out and try one. One day I will finally get around to the "improved SG"....
Toodle Pip!
