When Gurdaspur's Pathankot District was separated from it on July 27, 2011, the city was an obvious candidate to serve as the district seat. It is, in fact, the most significant city in the entire area, acting not only as the administrative centre for the Pathankot district but also as a vacation destination for visitors to the three northern Indian states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab. The city is also very important to the Indian military establishments because of its position.
