The French composer Benjamin Godard (1849-95) was actually a violinist, but was also an excellent composer for the piano, best-known for his several books of studies. He wrote much salon music, including popular numbered series of mazurkas and waltzes, of which the second is the best-known. Godard wrote six sets of 'Magic Lantern' pieces. This one - though written for piano solo - would work well in a flute and piano arrangement. Godard gives the tempo marking 'Allegro', and the exposed flute-like trills and other figures are really tricky to articulate. I imagine that the textures of this unusual piece could have influenced Saint-Saëns when he came (years after Godard's early death) to write the middle movement of his Oboe Sonata.
