Another four and half tons of World War II era munitions has been safely disposed of off the coast of Bougainville as part of Operation RENDER SAFE 14. Coordinated by Royal Australian Navy Clearance Divers, the undersea disposal saw the destruction of several 2000 pound bombs as well as three US manufactured Mark 12 sea mines. Before being transported to the marine disposal site, the munitions were transported to a secure beach, slung beneath an Australian Defence Force (ADF) MRH-90. The ADF led Operation RENDER SAFE 14 involves Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Solomon Islands and is on ongoing peacetime commitment to reduce the threat of explosive Remnants of War in the South West Pacific.
