Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve is located in Yellow Springs, OH. Its trails (2.5 miles) take hikers along the Little Miami River, providing views of a narrow canyon that forms a channel of the river, several waterfalls, imposing cliffs, unique rock formations, and breathtaking overlooks of the gorge.
The "Narrows" Trail is a hike along the north rim of Clifton Gorge. It provides a view of the Little Miami River as it rapidly flows through a narrow channel made of limestone. This hike has little elevation change, and the terrain is mostly flat and hardened clay, with little exposed roots or rocky surfaces, which makes for an easy hike.
The Gorge Trail descends several hundred feet into Clifton Gorge and follows the Little Miami River westward, providing an up close view of the cliffs and other rock formations that make Clifton Gorge a such a unique and beautiful place. Hikers descend into the gorge by stair case, and face more challenging terrain for the approx. 1 mile hike, with exposed roots, rocky surfaces, and regular changes in elevation. The 200 foot, steep ascent out of the gorge is nearly a straight shot, and the surface is rocky nearly the whole way up, making the climb moderately challenging.
Clifton Gorge Nature Preserve is adjacent to John Bryan State Park, so the two areas could both be visited in a single day. In fact, the Gorge Trail of the Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve connects to several of the trails in John Bryan State Park.
