Vasto is a city in the Abruzzo region, Chieti province in Italy. It has 41,406 inhabitants and an area of 70 km². Vasto is located on the Adriatic Sea. Vasto was probably founded by a Dalmatian tribe. In Roman times it was known as histonium, a name it lost in the unrest after the collapse of the Roman Empire. The inhabitants of the city are known as Vastesi or Histoniensi. The city's sights include the Cattedrale di San Giuseppe from the end of the 13th century.
In the old town rises the mighty Caldora castle from the 15th century, which was built on the site of an older complex from the High Middle Ages.
A museum founded in 1849 in the Palazzo D'Avalos presents a coin collection and works by French impressionists and contemporary artists. Vasto is embellished by an original monument that marks this splendid strip of Abruzzo on a rock. Although it is often mistakenly called "The Little Mermaid", the monument is dedicated to the bather, a tribute to feminine beauty and the many characteristics of women.
The agile silhouette from a distance looks like a girl whose hair is tied back onto her swimsuit before diving into the crystal clear waters of the sea.
The bronze casting has stood on the rock of Scaramuzza since 1979 and was created by the Abruzzo sculptor Aldo D'Adamo. It weighs half a ton and is three meters and sixty meters high.
